Subject: Urgent Call to End Whaling in Iceland
Dear Prime Minister and Ministers,
I am writing to state my support for the decision to pause whaling last summer, allowing time for animal welfare to be considered and new regulations to be implemented. It would have been morally and legally wrong to allow the hunting of whales to continue with the level of suffering they experienced in 2022.
In 2023, Icelanders showed the world that they are against whaling. I stand alongside the Icelandic activists, the organisations and the politicians working hard to improve the protection of whales in Icelandic waters. I stand beside the wider Icelandic public who wish to see this out-dated and cruel industry come to end.
The five year quota and license has now expired. A moment of celebration but I urge the Icelandic government to issue no new quotas or permits for whaling in Icelandic waters and, instead to pass the bill to ban whaling.
